Most recently when we purchased a domain it took them almost two weeks to verify and activate the domain, when we called and asked why it was taking this long they told us that it was because it was lost in their back end and would take up to 48 hours (additional from the week it already took) for our domain to be activated and ready for use. Keep in mind that I called to verify the account a week before this and the person said it would be ready by the end of the day, so as you can imagine I was weary about this statement too. Also, when they finally did activate the domains we could not change the nameservers right away which is a major problem for someone who uses their own nameserver and does hosting elsewhere.
After all of this I did some searching online and it appears that 1&1 also has had several complaints about not canceling accounts right away (costing some users hundreds of dollars). I would advise anyone who reads this to stay clear of 1&1 hosting. While they may have amazing prices and deals the customer support you would get from any other webhosting provider is not there.
